Why Tom Merritt loves the Olympics
Hey folks,
I really like the Olympics. I know there are reasons I shouldn't. It's all about money. It's all about nationalism. It panders to dictators. It panders to capitalists. It's all about advertising. They're copyright abusers who are overly legalistic. So. Many. Reasons.
And yet.
I love it. I am lucky enough to have a brain that sees past all that and at least thinks it sees some actual athleticism and competition. I've loved the Olympics since 1976. That was the first one I remember being aware of. And the winter Olympics in Lake Placid in 1980 I followed closely. Or as closely as you could in a world with only broadcast television. Which mean watching ABC every night.
One of the things I love about my wife is she loves it too. Every couple years when the Olympics roll around we pop on the couch and watch and talk about it and cheer and groan and have a great time.
All of this is a long way of saying I'm really SO glad that NBC made it really freaking easy to watch the Olympics this year. At least if you want to pay for it. I mean there's stuff ont he free tier too but the real satisfying thing for me is the ad-free $9.999 a month tier. Peacock this time around created a section called "Olympics." easy to find.
In that section they have a row called "Live and upcoming." That, you know, has the stuff that's live and gives you a tease of what events are, you know, upcoming. And you can dig in by sport as well.
Granted this could be improved on but it is light years better than it used to be.
I should hasten to add my wife works for Rotten Tomatoes which is owned by NBC so she gets a discount adn we only have to pay $4.99 a month for the ad free thing. So don't believe anything I say about it frankly.
Still. I love the Olympics.
Tom
