Why Facebook is Meta But Also Still Facebook
Hey folks,
Lots of thoughts about Facebook's name change this week. First, I know YOU know this, but to help explain it to your friends; Facebook the social network is still called Facebook. It's the parent company that owns Facebook that is now called Meta. The confusion this has caused is one of the reasons they changed the name. When we talk about Facebook we almost always mean the social network. And the social network is still going to be called Facebook. The company that owns Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus will be called Meta.
Whew.
OK.
There are lots of other reasons they're changing the parent company name too. One is that Mark Zuckerberg sees the future of the company as being somehow involved in the so far nonexistent Metaverse. There isn't one definition of the metaverse yet but I did like Meta's way of defining it as being IN the internet instead of looking AT the internet. That seems to capture the essential difference between what we have now and what the Metaverse might become someday. We're going to have Nate Lanxon from Bloomberg on DTNS soon to explain what the metaverse actually means at this point. So be on the lookout for that.
But there's one big reason Meta is pivoting to the Metaverse. On Friday's DTNS we also discuss that plus how Facebook is trying to avoid the Innovator's Dilemma. I mean Meta is trying to avoid it.
And if you're tired of Facdebook and Meta and all of it I have some other good stuff for you.
If you're confused about the whole TPM thing with windows, this week's Know A Little More is all about Trusted Platform Modules. What it is and why it exists.
Upskilling is a huge business trend so I have 5 things you need to know about why it's better to train employees than replace them.
And I'm in the thick of podcasting The Girl at the Bottom of the Lake. Not to late to jump in on the Patreon and get all the episodes.
Cheers,
Tom
