Tom Fights Covid and Learns to Research
Hey there,
I did two things that I'm pretty proud of this week.
One was publish the episode of "A Word" with writer Mallory O'Meara. Mallory's a great person. I met her at DragonCon years ago and she has been nice enough to stay in touch over the years and be a pal at author events and such. She's incredibly successful in her writing-- like winning a James Beard Award for food writing successful. So I wanted to talk to her about research.
We dip into the difference between actual research like she has to do for her books, and the kind of "research" people tell each other to do on the internet. And I got some really interesting perspective from her about how someone who researches for a living, deals with trying to decide what to know about things we don't have time to research. Anyway, it's the best example so far of an episode that talks about how to think rather than what to think. Thanks Mallory!
I also was invited by Maryanne Garry of the University of Waikato to participate in a panel on memory and contact tracing. I'll be honest , the chance to listen and learn from the scientists on the panel was the best thing about it. But I also got a chance to represent what consumers think and how they think about things and discuss some things we might be able to learn from how contact tracing did and did not work. So I think it's absolutely worth a watch. You'll learn something too.
Oh look, it finally got down to 90. I should go enjoy the cool fall temperatures here. Talk to you soon!
Cheers,
Tom
