I Went to CES and Survived
Hey folks,
I just got back from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. I spent all week doing the following.
7AM Get up[ and start reading through thousands of news articles about CES announcements while eating a banana and a croissant I bought in advance and drinking some instant mix coffee. Start writing up the best fo them for DTNS.
9:00AM - Grab my extremely heavy backup full of gear and walk the 10 minutes to the Central Hall location where they gave me a nice room and some ethernet to use to stream the show. Set up all the equipment from my backup to be the studio. Continue reading and writing.
11:00 AM - Run downstairs to the Quzino’s and buy a turkey sandwhich, coffee nd two waters, one for me and one for my guest.
12:00 PM - Our guest usually arrive by now and we both jump into Discord and run through the rundown to plan for how the show is going to go.
12:30 - Jump into Stremyard and test the audio and frame the video.
1:00 - Show is live!
2:00 - Show is done!
3-5 - Record another show or an interview. Monday it was Cordkillers. Tuesday it was It’s a Thing and Wednesday it was an interview with the CTA.
6-7 - Head to one of the evening press events to record a video walkthough, see what’s there and say hi to tech journo friends and colleagues. Also eat something. On Wednesday there was no press event so KTData toook me to get Korean and Hawaiian food at Island Style! SUCH A FIND!
10 - Head home and call Eileen to see how Sawyer is doing.
11 - Fall fast asleep.
Here’s a video of me setting up the stuff for the CES stream.
Thursday after the show I was done! So I actually got to say hi to Steve Ewell fro CES and shared a ride to the airport with Shannon Morse. By 10 PM I wa petting Sawyer the Dog on the head again and talking about Kpop news with Eileen.
All in all it’s a LOT of work so I don’t love it in that way. But I do think people really appreciate the info, so it’s totally worth doing. And I have loads of ideas for next year if we are blessed enough to be able to expand beyond just me eating mix coffee and turkey sandwiches! Which I’m confident we’ll be able to.
Thanks all! I’m going to do something not related to CES now. But I’ll leave you with a few pix from the show. Talk to you soon!
Tom
